The Adaptability Test helps distinguish between individuals who adapt easily to new situations and those who perform better on routine or repetitive jobs.

This test is designed to help identify applicants who can learn new tasks quickly, adapt to new situations easily and follow instructions quickly and accurately.

Normative Data. Percentile norms are listed for the following job classifications:

  • general office
  • office machine and data processing
  • secretaries and stenographers
  • skilled and unskilled

Validation Studies. Validation studies have been conducted in various companies for the following jobs and the scores on the adaptability test were found to be related to job performance:

  • clerk, accounting
  • clerk, adjustment
  • clerk, collector (credit)
  • finisher trainee
  • inspector (quality control)
  • order processor (clerical)
  • secretary
  • supervisor, first-line
  • supervisor, industrial
  • teletype trainee

Thirty- five questions of increasing difficulty yield a single score. There are two forms, A and B, for the Adaptability Test. They are comparable and can be used to retest individuals.


This assessment was originally a part of the Science Research Associates (SRA), assessment lineup, a subsidy of IBM. The ownership then changed as follows over the years and became London House, then Reid London House, then Pearson Reid London House, then Vangent, then General Dynamics IT, and finally Fifth Theory.

This, and other related assessments, went off market around 2018 and is no longer being published or available for purchase.
