The Organizational Effectiveness Inventory® (OEI) is your gateway to a deeper understanding of your organization’s culture and performance, gained through the perspectives of the people who live it every day.
A partner to the Organizational Culture Inventory® (OCI®), the OEI provides valid, reliable, and usable “climate” data on the structures, systems, technologies, and skills/qualities that shape your culture and how they can be modified and developed to improve long-term effectiveness at the individual, group, and organizational levels.
What Is The Organizational Effectiveness Inventory?
Developed by Dr. Robert A. Cooke, the Organizational Effectiveness Inventory (OEI) provides organizations with measures of their performance along individual, group, and organizational outcomes. It also assesses the internal factors and conditions that have an impact on performance and can serve as levers for cultural change. Administered alone, the OEI can be used in place of traditional attitude surveys or to bring meaning to engagement survey results. Unlike most attitude surveys (which focus only on outcomes such as job satisfaction), the OEI also provides information regarding the structures, systems, technologies, and skills/ qualities that can be modified to enhance performance and long-term effectiveness.
HOW DOES THE ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS INVENTORY WORK?
The OEI consists of 128 questions designed to provide the organization with information about itself, its effectiveness, and its impact on members. Questions focus on the respondent’s job, department or workgroup, and immediate supervisor or manager, as well as broader, organization-wide issues. The results are presented in a comprehensive report. The report contains bar charts and tables that compare the organization’s results to our historical averages (based on over 700 organizations) and Constructive benchmarks (based on approximately 120 organizations with healthy cultures). Results can also be presented for subgroups (divisions, departments, branch offices, etc.). The standardized OEI takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and can be supplemented with up to 40 items or questions of your choice. Members’ responses to the survey are aggregated and electronically analyzed to generate a report to support your organizational development or culture change initiative. When administered along with the culture survey, you are provided with a combined OCI/OEI feedback report that integrates the results of the two assessments. A consultant or accredited practitioner then guides you through the findings and the steps required for successful change management.
The OEI survey is available online on almost any digital device as well as in hard copy format.
APPLICATIONS
The OEI can be used to:
- Quantitatively measure and monitor key outcomes and causal factors and conditions
- Determine the impact of organizational, team, and job level factors on effectiveness
- Assess employee attitudes, motivation, and stress levels
- Identify targets for changing and improving engagement and organizational performance
- Identify levers for moving the organization’s current culture toward its ideal
- Monitor the impact of organizational change initiatives and interventions
COMPLEMENTARY TOOLS
We recommend that you apply the OEI in tandem with the Organizational Culture Inventory®, which focuses on behavioral norms and expectations, to get a comprehensive picture of the organization’s operating culture, current outcomes, and levers for changing culture and strengthening performance.
The Life Styles Inventory™ and ACUMEN® Leadership WorkStyles™ 360 feedback assessments can be used as a follow-up when the OEI results indicate that improvements in leadership are needed.
When the OEI is administered in conjunction with our Organizational Culture Inventory® (OCI®), a combined OCI/OEI Feedback Report is produced that presents the results of both surveys, as well as correlations between the OCI norms and the OEI measures. The combined OCI/OEI Feedback Report provides organizations with a description of the current operating culture, the impact of that culture on outcomes, and the internal factors that are likely reinforcing the current culture (and, in turn, can be used as levers for change).
THE BENEFITS FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION
The Organizational Effectiveness Inventory measures effectiveness at the individual, group and organizational levels and identifies the internal practices and conditions that lead to effectiveness both directly and indirectly via their impact on culture.
The OEI can be used as part of organizational change initiatives as a tool for:
- assessing members’ attitudes, motivation, and stress levels
- identifying performance targets for the organization as well as for members and teams and/or subunits within which they work
- documenting the need and the “case” for improvement and change
- selecting organizational development strategies and levers for culture change
- monitoring and evaluating the impact of change and development initiatives and interventions
Make the Organizational Effectiveness Inventory® part of your drive for change
The OeI® is used and facilitated exclusively by people who have been prepared and accredited in its administration and interpretation. We offer two options:
- A qualified and experienced consultant can help you to use the OCI® and implement the cultural changes you seek. Simply contact us to get connected with a consultant who’s right for the organization.
- The entire change process can be led internally in your organization by arranging OCI® accreditation for one or more change team members. This will ensure they have the skills to administer the OCI® and identify appropriate levers to achieve long-term culture change. To get started, register for an accreditation workshop.
Certification is mandatory for this product.
The OEI requires accreditation via the General Certification Workshop before materials can be purchased.
