True-to-Life™ Leader V2

The True-to-Life™ Leader V2 immerses candidates in the challenges they’ll encounter on the job and virtually places candidates in the role for which they’re applying, before you hire them – empowering you to see firsthand whether they succeed or fail at the job.  The result of the V2 update is that greater variance will be seen across candidate score results for V2. Results are reported in score bands, such that the Overall Battery score places candidates into an A, B, C, or D band overall.  Whereas the original computations produced a smaller range of candidate score band results, sometimes leaning towards higher bands, the updated v2 computations result in more balanced spread of score results and more accurate distinctions among candidates across all score bands.

True-to-Life™ Leader V2 Update Details

The original normative data for the True-to-Life™ Leader assessment battery were based in part on the pilot study described in the True-to-Life™ Leader Assessment Battery Technical Documentation (2018). At the time the assessment battery was first published, these pilot data were the primary data available on the SJT portion of the battery.

In Q3 of 2024, data were extracted from our archives for 17,794 candidates for supervisory jobs in government who completed the True-to-Life™ Leader assessment battery between July 2018 and July 2024. These data were used to update norms. As mentioned above, the True-to-Life™ Leader Key Competencies, expected Performance Outcomes, and Overall Battery Score are each computed as weighted combinations of various SJT and GPS scales. Scale standard deviations are critical in these computations, to ensure standard deviations across scales included in a given computation are purposely weighted.

Analyses of the candidate data extracted in 2024 revealed that the GPS standard deviations used in the original True-to-Life™ Leader computations were similar to the GPS standard deviations observed in the 2024 candidate data extract. Therefore, no adjustments were made to the GPS standard deviations used in the True-to-Life™ Leader assessment battery computations. For the SJT scales, however, the standard deviations used in the original True-To-Life™ Leader computations differed meaningfully from those observed in the 2024 candidate data extract. Computational formulas were therefore adjusted to use the observed candidate SJT standard deviations for all Key Competency and Performance Outcome scores, as well as the Overall Battery Score.

These updated computations were applied to the entire archival candidate data sample (n = 17,794) and updated norms were developed based on the recomputed scores for this large sample.

The result of the v2 update is that greater variance will be seen across candidate score results for v2. Results are reported in score bands, such that the Overall Battery score places candidates into an A, B, C, or D band overall. Key Competencies and Performance outcomes are reported such that candidates fall into one of five bands on each score: Considerable Development Area, Development Area, Neutral, Strength, or Considerable Strength.

Whereas the original computations produced a smaller range of candidate score band results, sometimes leaning towards higher bands, the updated v2 computations result in more balanced spread of score results and more accurate distinctions among candidates across all score bands.

The True-to-Life™ Leader V2 assessment battery contains two components: (1) a situational judgment test (SJT) and (2) a personality questionnaire.

The Leader SJT immerses candidates in the challenges they’ll encounter on the job. Across a range of leadership scenarios and settings, this online situational judgment test (SJT) virtually places candidates in the role for which they’re applying, before you hire them – empowering you to see firsthand whether they succeed or fail at the job.

The True-to-Life™ Leader V2 presents a set of brief descriptions or enactments of situations, and respondents must evaluate a set of possible alternative responses. The situations presented are work-related and tailored to supervisory positions. True-to-Life™ Leader V2 therefore provides insight into a candidate’s likely on-the-job behaviors by asking candidates to indicate how effective they believe different possible responses would be to each scenario. It also provides candidates with a window into the types of scenarios they might expect to encounter on the job, adding an element of a realistic job preview to your pre-hire process.

In addition to the situational judgment scenarios, candidates respond to questions from the ViewPoint General Personality Survey (GPS) asking about work-related behaviors, preferences, and personal characteristics. The True-to-Life™ Leader V2 battery ensures that candidates possess the range of skills, abilities, and characteristics needed to succeed in a supervisory role.

The scenarios and questions were developed through careful job analysis and evaluation of incidents critical to job success. Care was taken to ensure the scenarios and questions would appear realistic and job-related to applicants. The job relevancy of True-to-Life™ Leader V2 contrasts favorably with other assessments that contain numerous test items with little or no relevancy to the job.

The TTL assessment battery has a time limit of 60 minutes; however, respondents typically complete the battery in approximately 40 minutes.

Accurate, defensible, engaging, and easy to use, the True-to-Life™ Leader V2 assessments are modular and completely scalable. They can be administered to candidates alone or in combination with other relevant assessments, such as those designed to measure specific cognitive abilities or knowledge areas.

Whether you’re looking to assess 10 candidates or 10 thousand, True-to-Life™ Leader V2 is available immediately, and reporting is instantaneous. True-to-Life™ Leader V2 offers a Manager Report designed to provide candidate results and insights to recruiters, hiring managers, or interviewers, as well as a Participant Report designed to provide feedback directly to the candidate if desired, which can aid subsequent on-boarding or coaching efforts.

The Manager Report provides an Overall Participant Score indicating the candidate’s overall likelihood of success on the job, as well as scores on Key Competencies and job relevant Performance Outcomes (listed below), and suggested interview questions for each Key Competency.

The Participant Report provides narrative descriptions of the candidate’s results on each Key Competency, whether that competency represents a strength or development need for the candidate, and developmental feedback to candidates based on their competency results and designed to enhance competency related performance.

Key Competencies reported on the Manager and Participant reports include:

  • Communicating Effectively
  • Executing & Delivering on Objectives
