Response to Intervention
The concept of Response to Intervention (RTI) is changing the landscape for assessment professionals and opening new avenues for you to help guide students on the path to success every step of the way. We can help you make the most of this opportunity to expand your influence on young lives.
A Balanced View of RTI
There are four essential components of RTI:
- A school-wide, multiple-level instructional and behavioral system for preventing school failure
- Screening
- Progress Monitoring
- Data-based decision making for instruction, movement with-in the multi-level system and disability identification
The National Center on Response to Intervention offers a definition of response to intervention that reflects what is currently known from research and evidence-based practices and supports the implementation of a comprehensive RTI framework.
Response to intervention integrates assessment and intervention within a multi-level prevention system to maximize student achievement and to reduce behavioral problems. With RTI, schools use data to identify students at risk for poor learning outcomes, monitor student progress, provide evidence-based interventions, and adjust the intensity and nature of those interventions depending on a student’s responsiveness, and identify students with learning disabilities or other disabilities.
Raven’s™ Versions
Raven’s™ Advanced Progressive Matrices – III (Newest Version)
Raven’s™ APM-III is designed to objectively and efficiently screen general cognitive ability levels in job applicants. This new global item-banked version has instructions and enhanced reports available in more than 14 languages. It is equivalent in length and difficulty to the previous fixed-form version, APM-2 (which it replaces), with a correlation co-efficient of 0.97 between the old and new versions.
It is comprised of 23 randomized scoring items (from a large bank of items) and can be completed in 40 minutes. The use of a random item presentation format helps ensure that the chances of two takers receiving the same set of items is extremely low. The test is designed for both unproctored (unsupervised) and proctored test administration.
RAVEN’S is a gold-standard, highly trusted assessment measuring an individual’s general (cognitive) ability. It identifies the ability to:
- think laterally
- grasp new concepts quickly
- solve problems and tasks when faced with novel information in unfamiliar situations.
RAVEN’S is a non-verbal assessment that can be used across candidate pools where multiple languages are spoken, thus removing language bias.
The Advanced Progressive Matrices version of RAVEN’S (APM) was designed as a harder version of the RAVEN’S Standard Progressive Matrices test (SPM) and is used to assess applicants for supervisory, managerial, technical and executive level roles across all industry sectors. SPM is mainly used for entry-level and non-managerial roles.
RAVEN’S APM-III Report
This new report contains the following information:
- Skills and abilities assessed by the APM-III
- Norm reference group selected
- Score interpretation
In response to client requests and preferences, the new report also presents the score in four different ways:
- Percentile against a norm reference group
- T-scores that are standardized scores used to compare a test taker’s results. A T-score has a mean of 50 and standard deviation of 10
- STANINE (Standard Nine) scores are standardized scores based on a 9-point scale, with a mean of 5 and standard deviation of 2
- STEN (Standard Ten) scores are based on a 10-point scale, with a mean of 5.5 and a standard deviation of 2
No matter which method of presenting scores is preferred, they all allow for comparison of a test taker’s score relative to the normative reference group. No score is more accurate than another.
Four norm groups are available in the United States:
- Professionals and Individual Contributors
- Executives
- Directors
- Managers
Country specific norms are also available. Please consult the Norms Composition Tables for further information.

Raven’s™ Adaptive is a non-verbal, online, and adaptive, test. Abstract reasoning is defined as the ability to analyze information, detect patterns and relationships, and solve problems on an intangible level. Abstract reasoning tests are widely used by psychologists to measure general mental ability (GMA). This test measures levels of fluid intelligence that individuals tap into when working out new and unfamiliar problems for the first time.
Abstract reasoning skills can be seen in situations that require:
- Lateral thinking
- Learning new concepts quickly
- Solving new and complex problems without drawing on prior knowledge
Individuals with higher scores on this assessment are more likely to learn or “grasp” new things quickly, think laterally, solve unfamiliar problems and make meaning out of confusion.
As a non-verbal measure, the test can provide a fairer measure of GMA for groups of job applicants containing individuals with different native languages.
The main features of this new test in the DAT series are:
- the test is suitable for unsupervised (unproctored) administration due to an “item-bank” design whereby items (questions) are selected from a large pool.
- it is also suitable for online completion in a supervised environment such as an assessment or development center.
- adaptive testing offers a shorter test that not only improves the candidate’s experience but can also provide the assessor with a score that is more reliable. CAT presents items that adapt to the ability level of each test taker. CAT tests allow higher ability test takers to demonstrate their skill whilst those with a lower ability find the test more motivating.
- the adaptive nature of the test allows individuals with differing levels of GMA to be assessed with the same test.
- One of the most proven predictors of performance in roles requiring the ability to solve new and complex problems, and learn quickly
- Non-verbal – reduces potential linguistic bias, and minimizes effect of prior knowledge / verbal ability
When to use the Raven’s™ Adaptive:
- Abstract reasoning is the ability to see underlying patterns and identify the subtle relationships between seemingly unrelated things. It involves considering problems at a deeper level and seeing the bigger picture meaning. Abstract reasoning underpins our ability to learn and grasp new concepts and tasks quickly.
- In the world of work, problems are rarely straightforward and not everything has a right or wrong answer. Being able to work out the themes and principles that link complex information is an essential skill.
Three norm groups are available:
- US – Director & Executive
- US – Manager
- US – Prof / Individual Contributor
Standard 2.0 RPM – NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

The Raven’s™ SPM provides information about an individual’s capacity for analyzing and solving problems, abstract reasoning, and ability to learn.
While both the Raven’s™ SPM and SPM Plus are suitable for use for entry-level management and mid-level individual contributor positions, the SPM Plus is a somewhat more difficult assessment and provides better differentiation for higher level positions.
The SPM or SPM Plus score can be used as an indication of a candidate’s potential for success in professional, management and high-level technical positions that require clear thinking, problem identification, holistic situation assessment, and monitoring of tentative solutions for consistency with all available information. The SPM or SPM Plus score also can be used for developmental purposes in occupational and educational settings. The nonverbal aspect of each test minimizes the impact of cultural or language bias.
The Raven’s™ SPM and SPM Plus each produces a single raw score as well as percentile rank to indicate the candidate’s educative ability or the ability to think clearly and extract meaning out of events, compared to a norm group.
The report provides the candidate’s raw score and norm-based percentile score. This is supplemented with a brief narrative report.
Six norm groups are available:
- Managers
