What is the Jackson Personality Inventory™-Revised?

Personality can determine important characteristics like dependability, self-discipline, leadership, and the desire to make a good first impression. The Jackson Personality Inventory™-Revised (JPI™-R) is a personality test that is designed to assess personality traits to predict an individual’s behavior in a variety of settings and environments, including work, education, teams, and interpersonal situations. The JPI-R contains 300 true/false items and can be used to assess normal adult personality in selection or counseling contexts, conduct research requiring comprehensive coverage of personality dimensions, assist with guidance and career counseling, and develop greater self-awareness and understanding of human behavior and motivation.

Who Should Use the Jackson Personality Inventory™-Revised?

  • Counselors seeking to examine clients’ personality trait information at both the cluster or individual scale level
  • Psychologists looking for detailed trait information to include in a selection battery
  • Users seeking convenient online administration and a comprehensive, easy to interpret report
  • Research on personality in a variety of settings

Why Should I Use the Jackson Personality Inventory™-Revised?

CONVENIENT. The JPI-R can be administered in 45 minutes online.  Reports are generated immediately.  Results are presented using graphs, numbers, and scale descriptions.

ELABORATE TEST CONSTRUCTION. A large item pool and extensive item analyses have helped create a superior assessment that is highly reliable and sensitive to response bias. In particular, the items selected correlate minimally with desirability–the tendency to answer in a way that “sounds good”, rather than answering honestly. The JPI-R also has special features that help detect random, or non-purposeful responding. Test norms are based on the responses of 1107 North American individuals.

RELIABLE AND VALID. The JPI-R is a reliable and valid measure of personality. Hundreds of correlations of JPI scales with a variety of criteria, ranging from occupational preferences to executive performance, are reported in the manual.

Reliability and Validity

The items on the JPI-R are the same as those included in the original JPI (with minor exceptions in the case of the Traditional Values scale). Accordingly, findings bearing on the JPI’s psychometric properties are applicable to the JPI-R. In two studies, median internal consistency reliabilities (Bentler’s Theta) were .90 and .93. Data on JPI validity include analyses of two multitrait-multi-method matrices employing adjective checklist, self rating, and peer ratings. Hundreds of correlations of JPI scales with a variety of criteria, ranging from occupational preferences to attitudes toward marijuana use, are reported in the manual.
